Child Proofing

So there was a segment on better homes & gardens earlier on child safety in the home that really got me thinking.

Personally I found it to be quite ridiculous.  Yes some of the suggestions have been around for many years and are great suggestions however the majority of the segment just left me wondering how kids are ever meant to learn these lessons in life which we all learnt.

I understand putting these lock things on cupboards to stop kiddies getting into them but putting a lock on the toilet seat so your child doesn't jump on into the loo??!!  Or putting a rubber thingy around all the doors so they can't jam their fingers in them?!

What ever happened to teaching children about the dangers of shutting your fingers in doors or maybe teaching them about why they don't want to stick their heads into the toilet bowl!!

Don't get me wrong, safety first is my motto but seriously, no wonder so many people these days do not have any 'common sense'.  It's because they are all wrapped in cotton wool for the first many years of their lives that they don't learn these simple lessons! Shut a door on your fingers, guess what, it HURTS but you will not die, nor will you be permanently scarred from the experience, you will however learn, quick smart, that you need to remove your fingers from the door way before the door shuts!

Seriously people, kids are going to hurt themselves!!! That's how kids learn!

I ask, in 10 - 20 years are we going to be filled with a society of adults who think that every door has rubber blockers so your fingers don't get caught!

  1. Did you know that every year, there are more than 3,000,000 unintentional injuries to children 14 and under that happen in the home and require care in an emergency room?

That is equal to 8,219 injuries per day. Sadly, each day approximately six children die from injuries resulting from fires, burns, drownings, poisonings, choking, suffocation, strangulation and falls in the home.

So, yes it is a very serious issue and yes it is sad that kiddies get hurt..but they DO need to learn the hard way..or they may end up as 'adult babies' * a new phenomenon i will blog about shortly...

Kids will be curious, thats for sure...

I remember when i was a child i had a 'near' brush with death...do you remember those ads on TV that showed you what not to do! The was one particular ad that had a toddler with a knife trying to put it into a power socket and then a big white light and nothing...so, being a curious kiddy myself i got a fork and attempted to put it in the power socket to see what the big white light was!! My father saved me just in the nick of time! Point being, you can't go now and live without electricity or put the power sockets high on the wall...I live and learnt my lesson..

Young children are curious and don’t always understand what is dangerous. Have you asked yourself how your kids see your home? What looks interesting, and what can be reached? Drawers left open can easily turn into stairs to the TV!

  2. Well I did ask myself that question now that you have asked it... Given that my 'child' is of the fluffy furry variety I need not worry about him opening cupboard doors or eating my medicines but I do however need to fear him chewing through electrical cords & jumping up onto unsecured items that may result in them falling down. Having said that my dear furry friend, Pete (aka pete the pirate pansy) has chewed through an electrical cord and he has jumped up onto many a unsecured item and the result is that he has now learnt NOT to do these things as they may very well result in an electric jolt or a bunch of items falling upon him. Luckily he is an agile quick witted animal who is fast on his feet and has not succumbed to any trips to the emergency room as a result, he has simply annoyed me in the process and again, he has learnt these things prove a great way to get my attention at 5am when he wants to go out.

Just a thought but maybe instead of spending a fortune on items to 'safety child proof' your home you should think of investing that money into ninja training courses for your young so when faced with a situation they have the skills required to get them selves out of trouble.
