'Dangerous Dogs'

Recently there has been a fair amount of media relating to the 'banning & destroying of dangerous breeds of dogs'.

Now this is not a new topic by any means, it has always been something which has been a controversial topic and a topic in which people have very strong opinions.


Now yes, facts are facts and the facts present to us that there are more serious injuries caused from larger dog breeds than that of the smaller variety - common sense would tell one that this is due to the sheer size of the animal and not related to that of the actual breed of an animal. There are many factors that need to be assessed before passing such judgment on any animal that attacks someone or something!

Yes I agree - certain breeds are more vicious and more prone to be temperamental than others my argument to the subject is this:

*By 'banning' something we only send it 'underground' we do not wipe out its existence, we simply can not control it or track it, at all.  We simply put a 'bandaid' on the problem but we do not actually deal with the problems that are related to it. Look at 'illegal substance use' for example, by it being illegal it doesn't stop people obtaining it now does it?

*This so called 'ban' of certain breeds will not prevent or stop people from obtaining these breeds of animals - to my understanding there are many breeds of dog, cat, snake, lizard etc that are 'prohibited breeds' which simply means you can not register the animal as such breed, it certainly does not stop you from owning one

*You need a license to drive a car but anyone can buy a pet - maybe there should be better screening of people who breed and purchase these animals & maybe there should be more enforcement of the training courses that purchasers need to under go with their new pet


Realistically the problem lays with the owner, if you drive a V8 car into a tree then who is at fault? Certainly not the vehicle, its the person driving it!

If there were better screening of pet ownership and these so called 'dangerous breeds' owners were required to undertake some sort of education about training their new addition then possibly we would have less occurrence of these malicious attacks.
If owners were required to have their new animal undertake proper training classes and the animal had to be involved in more socialization with not only humans but other animals then possibly this too could reduce the statistics.

Breeders need to be responsible for who they sell these sort after animals to.  By registering these animals we can better track their progress & with proper training and attention these animals are normally well behaved loyal pets.

I have not only owned a 'dangerous dog - who mind you used to get attacked by the cat and spend all day hanging out with at least 5 feline friends but I know many people who would be forced to 'destroy' a beloved family member under such regulations that these new 'laws' would enforce.

In the time that I have spent around many American pitbull terriors, rottweilers etc I can tell you this - I have had more damage inflicted upon myself from my DOMESTIC CAT!!

Animals that we choose to keep as pets need to be trained, we as owners need to take the responsibility for that! If you chose to have a pet then it is YOUR responsibility to ensure that it is educated & controlled so it will not cause harm to others, just as you would expect that a parent would educate & discipline their child to not cause harm to others.

I do agree that animals that are trained to fight do not mix well in society however, with the correct training & environment many of these 'killer animals' adapt to their surrounds & exhibit new behaviour.

Clearly you would not take a tiger out of the jungle and expect it to learn new ways, of course it would hunt it's prey and attack but most of the 'dangerous dog breeds' have been breed by well educated breeders & responsible owners for years and years, these animals are not fresh out of the pen!!

Without proper training any animal will attack and cause harm, the only difference with these partoicular breeds is the clout they have behind them due purely to their size & structure.

I simply ask, why is it we are so quick to pass blame onto something that can not talk back.  Every case is different but I think we like to have a scape goat and we need to pass blame onto someone else.  It's easier than actually taking ownership of something and actually taking responsibility for it.

to crawl or not to crawl....

After our discussion today Jax I have begun some research on the 'kids who don't crawl have poor hand eye coordination' topic.

Points to note:

-I am unable to find any further info on these apparent ' adult crawling classes' - and am therefore starting to think that maybe they are a cover for some other kind of 'adult only' based activity
-I have discovered that there are many kids who don't crawl before they walk (or only crawl for a very brief period of time - such as 3 weeks or so - before walking)
-It proved to be a very 'distressing' subject for many parents (they think their child is somehow disadvantaged or has some sort of disability)
-Many people link this non activity (not crawling) with lack of intelligence
-Only 1 out of the 7 links that google presented me with  (that I actually looked at that is, there was pages of them...) actually linked poor hand eye coordination with non crawling behavior, the rest all seemed to be geared generally towards the 'does my child have a disability' area
-I am sure there are many more arguments/opinions/facts surrounding this subjet but these are the ones that have stood out in my mine, I am open to any kind of feedback or discussions on the subjet


So.... I am hoping that the big wide interweb world might enlighten us further on this pressing subject.

After reading many different opinions and sites regarding babies who do not crawl before walking (or do so for only a short few weeks) I now am questioning many things.

I am someone who was walking at 9 months of age.  I only crawled for possibly a few weeks (if that - I am working on a survey for my mother to fill in so I have more accurate facts on this subject) but I am someone who wants everything I want yesterday.  If someone else is doing something I want to do it too (within reason - if someone else was jumping off a bridge I'd be the one questioning why it was such a good idea) so therefore when my sister 2 years my senior was running about and opening cupboard doors (the only door locks that exisited in our childhood were elastic bands around handles or chairs pushed up against them) I wanted IN on the fun she was having!

One theory that I have read tonight however is that some children don't crawl as it causes them pain, this pain often linked to their spines be unaligned usually a result of a difficult entry into the world.

I must say that according to my mother she didn't exactly have a dream birth with me and being the middle of the night in the country (and given that I was 2 weeks early & the doctor who apparently had a date at the golf course bright n early the next day was far from impressed about a difficult birth on a Saturday night/Sunday morning) it was a bit of a rushed job which according to the chiropractor I saw in my late teens was probably the reason why I was having so much lower back pain & spinal issues.

I now wonder - did I not crawl because it caused me pain?
And if this is why I was not able to crawl and if not crawling has resulted in my poor hand eye coordination (which therefore means my unknown dream of being a hip hop dancer or ever participating effectively in a zumba class is impossible as I am uncoordinated) is someone to blame for this?

I now want to participate in these so called 'adult crawling classes' and to learn how to crawl so if I decide that I want to take up dance or do a zumba lesson and not feel retarded but where do I find such a class?

I invite any comments, feedback, suggestions or opinions on this pressing topic.

Because, it's a gonna be a problem for me!

Child Proofing

So there was a segment on better homes & gardens earlier on child safety in the home that really got me thinking.

Personally I found it to be quite ridiculous.  Yes some of the suggestions have been around for many years and are great suggestions however the majority of the segment just left me wondering how kids are ever meant to learn these lessons in life which we all learnt.

I understand putting these lock things on cupboards to stop kiddies getting into them but putting a lock on the toilet seat so your child doesn't jump on into the loo??!!  Or putting a rubber thingy around all the doors so they can't jam their fingers in them?!

What ever happened to teaching children about the dangers of shutting your fingers in doors or maybe teaching them about why they don't want to stick their heads into the toilet bowl!!

Don't get me wrong, safety first is my motto but seriously, no wonder so many people these days do not have any 'common sense'.  It's because they are all wrapped in cotton wool for the first many years of their lives that they don't learn these simple lessons! Shut a door on your fingers, guess what, it HURTS but you will not die, nor will you be permanently scarred from the experience, you will however learn, quick smart, that you need to remove your fingers from the door way before the door shuts!

Seriously people, kids are going to hurt themselves!!! That's how kids learn!

I ask, in 10 - 20 years are we going to be filled with a society of adults who think that every door has rubber blockers so your fingers don't get caught!

common isn't so common nowadays - true that!

i fear that the kids of tomorrow will loose all sense of 'the art of communication'..i really do..
or do i? do i really want to communicate with the socially inapt? or.. should i be trying to engage and educate this 'art' just like my mother, my grandmother, my grandmother's grandmother?


but we cant deny that we are living in an increasingly cyber society...nowadays 'the young ones' dont say, "hey, how are you doing?" they tweet, they foursquare they FB, they skype they type...

but bec we do all this too!!!!!! but key is...we were born when there wasn't all this technology..so we naturally know how to communicate in a way that we would say is 'good mannered' AND we relate with people on all social platforms...maybe these so called bad mannered people (youth?) simply dont have the skills we were born with!

i dont know what way to go...engage the 'bad mannered' techno generation and say ' put down your iphone' look me in the eye and say 'hey, how you doing?' or...say nothing at all?

it's a pickle

Is it just me or is common sense & common courtesy not very common at all???

So I've been thinking some thoughts after chatting with some friends about this so called 'common sense' and 'common courtesy'.

Seems to me that neither are very common at all.. Not like as our grand parents and parents would say 'back in the day'.

These days instead of thinking about a solution we simply 'call a friend' for them to sort it out and answer our questions & solve problems...
When driving and someone lets you in, no need to wave, why would you?  It's our right to be let in is it? The other person isn't being kind? 

Hmmmm

In this fast paced world of social networking and iPhones have we forgotten our manners???
